From Global News.
China’s foreign ministry on Thursday called for a China-United States relationship to be one of “mutual respect” where differences can be “properly” managed.
The response came to a question at a briefing that asked confirmation of whether Chinese president Xi Jinping had called or messaged U.S. president-elect Donald Trump.
Xi’s congratulatory message through his ministry’s office was more subdued than in 2016, as a second question focused on China’s response to Trump’s proposed tariffs and Trump saying Xi would not invade Taiwan.
Trump’s win could revive issues from his first presidency, when he started the bruising trade war with the world’s second-largest economy in 2018, though striking a truce just before the COVID-19 pandemic struck in January 2020.
