The work continues to get Arabella ready for her journey south. With just a week left before sailing from Maine to Cape Cod, time is ticking. A major improvement includes permanently mounting the solar panels to the shrouds, leading Steve to an unfavorable task of drilling a hole into Arabella’s locust covering boards. Recent sewing projects include a pouch for the reef lines on the boom and a berth lee cloth to prevent anyone from falling out of their bunk. Tasks below the waterline—an anode replacement on the propeller and a good scrape to the bottom—call for a diver.
Taking a break from the epic to-do list, Steve enjoys a major perk of living on the Maine coast—lobstering. Fun fact: bands are placed on lobsters to not only protect humans, but to protect themselves from each other. Without bands, lobsters will attack. After checking on the traps a week after setting them, a nice lobster dinner is enjoyed by all.

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38′ wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin’s Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel’s gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they’ve built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
