“Alberta sits on treaty land”: Indigenous leaders oppose separatist movement

From Global News.

An Alberta separatist group claims it has gathered enough signatures to trigger a referendum, but Indigenous leaders are strongly against the movement. Stay Free Alberta says more than 300,000 people signed its petition, nearly double the threshold to prompt the province to put the question to voters.

“All of Alberta sits on treaty land and that’s not going to change whether one government or some people have that inclination,” Chief Sheldon Sunshine of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation said.

As Melissa Ridgen reports, what happens next hinges on a legal challenge by a group of First Nations arguing the push to separate from Canada infringes on their rights.
