From Global News.
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is set to hold a press conference Thursday, providing an update on the situation of a rare hantavirus cluster — the Andean strain in particular — linked to cruise ship travel.
The WHO said that it believes there may have been human-to-human transmission of the rodent-borne illness on the MV Hondius cruise ship carrying almost 150 passengers from Argentina to Cape Verde — with four Canadian passengers confirmed on board.
“The risk to [the] general public is low. This is not a virus that spreads like flu or COVID. It’s quite different,” WHO Epidemic and Pandemic Preparedness Director Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove said Tuesday.
Prior to the press conference, the WHO reported three lab-confirmed cases of hantavirus and five suspected cases. Three passengers have died amid the outbreak.
