A ‘hostile, unpredictable’ US has Canada and Mexico seeking stronger trade ties

From Global News.

After failing to strike new trade deals with the U.S., officials from Canada and Mexico are meeting this week in a bid to strengthen trade ties between the two countries, focusing on economic cooperation, supply chains and trade infrastructure.

Trade policy expert Barry Appleton says the meetings are a "calculated, strategic moment" for the Mexicans and for the Canadians who face the same foe, as the US administration has opted for "power plays over partnership."

"While Mexico secured a 90-day tariff pause and Canada didn’t, the mood in Washington isn’t just hostile, it’s highly unpredictable. And so both sides need to sort of get together and figure out what the hell is going on," he said.
