Air India has confirmed that 241 passengers and crew have died after a London-bound plane crashed shortly after take-off in Ahmedabad, western India.

In a statement the airline said that the "sole survivor" – a British citizen – is being treated in hospital.

There were 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian on the flight, according to Air India.
