German police shot and wounded a man who was threatening them with an axe and a Molotov cocktail on Sunday.

The incident occurred in Hamburg, only a few hours prior to a Euro 2024 soccer game between Netherlands and Poland at the Volksparkstadion Hamburg stadium.

The suspect had reportedly left a bar, according to police, and set fire to his Molotov cocktail while approaching several people and multiple police officers. Authorities opened fire on the man after he refused to lay down his axe near a Dutch fan parade.

Despite the proximity to Dutch fans, Hamburg Police spokesperson Sandra Levgruen said “this is an isolated case that is disconnected from football.“

Germany is hosting the month-long soccer tournament and thousands of fans were in Hamburg at the time of the incident.
