Canada would have to double its current defence spending to achieve its stated goal of reaching NATO targets, a parliamentary watchdog found Wednesday.
At this year’s NATO summit in Washington, D.C., Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged that Canada will reach the alliance’s target of two per cent of the gross domestic product by 2032.
Canada’s updated defence policy forecasts spending will rise from 1.37 per cent of GDP to 1.76 by 2030. But, the report from the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) says that figure is “erroneous.”
Global’s Kyle Benning reports on how the Trudeau government is responding.
