COP29: Activists say more than 1,700 fossil fuel lobbyist “snakes” at climate summit

From Global News.

A group of activists slammed fossil fuel lobbyists as “snakes” at the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan Friday, calling for them to be kicked out of the annual meeting.

“They are snakes. Oil and gas lobbyists, corporations promoting gas exports in Africa and the global south are snakes. And you know what a snake does? Snakes bite… And that’s why we say we don’t want them here,” said Olamide Martins Ogunlade with Angel Support Foundation, a non-profit organization advocating for environmental sustenance.

As activists protested in the halls outside, former U.S. vice president Al Gore criticized the fossil fuel industry in a fiery speech.

Gore urged politicians not to “cower” before fossil fuel companies and suggested the industry has “gotten pretty good at capturing COPs also.”

The success of this year’s summit hinges on whether countries can agree on a new finance target to help developing countries adapt to climate change.
