Firefighters respond to wildfires in New York and New Jersey as multiple blazes burn in the region

From NPR.

Responders described dry, windy conditions in the region as the worst in half a century for this time of year. Typically, autumn rains ease fire pressure.

Fires are burning in Inwood Hill Park on the northern tip of Manhattan, N.Y.. The park is the last natural forest and salt marsh on the island, according to the city’s parks department.

In New Jersey, firefighters are still trying to contain the Jennings Creek wildfire, which has burned over 5,000 acres along the New York-New Jersey border. Officials say one crewman battling that fire, 18-year-old Dariel Vasquez, was killed Saturday, when he was struck by a falling tree.
