From Global News.
Sotheby’s is putting Maurizio Cattelan’s 18‑karat gold toilet, titled ‘America,’ on the auction block in New York City on Nov. 18.
The starting bid is linked to the fluctuating price of gold, based on the piece’s approximately 101.2-kilogram gold weight, which is valued at around US$10 million.
“That’s an unconventional move. It is directly tied to the work’s raw material value in a way that really speaks to Cattelan’s own interest in the difference between commodity value and artistic value," said David Galperin, vice-chairman at Sotheby’s and head of the contemporary art department.
‘America’ gained notoriety as a fully functional artwork and satire on wealth and value. It was exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City in 2016-17 and made headlines again when it was stolen from the U.K.’s Blenheim Palace in 2019 and never recovered. This sale at Sotheby’s in New York features the only surviving version.
