__Description__
This is how William McKinley’s front porch in Canton, Ohio, reshaped the landscape of U.S. politics. Facing personal challenges due to his wife’s illness, McKinley turned his home into the epicenter of his 1896 presidential campaign. Without leaving his wife’s side, he delivered over 300 speeches to more than 750,000 visitors, outmatching his opponent William Jennings Bryan’s nationwide tours. This video explores how McKinley’s innovative porch campaign utilized the architectural significance of the porch as a bridge between public and private spaces. We explore the strategic use of targeted messaging and early mass media to reach millions, and examine the lasting impact of McKinley’s strategy on modern presidential campaigns, including recent elections.
