How Trump’s relationship with Putin undermines national security and empowers authoritarianism

From his presidency, we already know that Donald Trump’s relationship with Vladimir Putin has consequences. Trump sided with Putin over U.S. intelligence on election interference at the 2018 Helsinki summit, withheld aid from Ukraine, and continuously criticized NATO, creating conditions for Russia’s war in Ukraine. His allegiance to Putin undermined our national security, empowered authoritarianism, and threatened to destabilize global alliances. “This is a very scary moment,” says Sir William Browder, Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign head and author of ‘Freezing Order,’ “because we could be in a sort of World War III type of situation if Putin can run the roughshod over Europe, because he no longer has to worry about American aid for Ukraine.”
