Fighting in eastern Ukraine intensified Monday as Russian forces made advances in multiple cities across Donetsk Oblast, a region Moscow has occupied roughly 70 per cent of since their invasion began in early 2022.

Before successfully evacuating nine civilians from the frontlines of Kostiantynivka, officers from Ukraine’s special police unit, the White Angels, helped remove the body of a woman killed in Russian strikes.

Nearby Pokrovsk, too, faced bombardment Tuesday. And if occupied, these two cities could give the Russian military an advantage in seizing Kramatorsk and Sloviansk – Ukraine’s last major strongholds in Donetsk Oblast.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has acknowledged the severe pressure Pokrovsk is under, but has reassured Ukrainians that Russian forces are not in full control of any district.
