Scenes in Havana as Cuba is plunged into a nationwide blackout after the island’s biggest power plant failed, the energy ministry said, coming on the heels of weeks of extended outages across the cash-strapped country. Technical breakdowns, fuel shortages and high demand have caused the country’s thermoelectric power plants to constantly fail, forcing the government to declare an energy emergency and take measures such as closing schools and factories.
