Spoken-word poet Kondwani Fidel was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, which USA Today recently ranked the most dangerous city in the nation.
“Resilience is something that’s ingrained in you at a very young age growing up in Baltimore,” says Fidel in Jackson Tisi’s short documentary. “If you’re from or live in Baltimore, every year you’re losing people. That’s just a fact. Nobody goes untouched.”
“Hummingbirds in the Trenches” was directed by Jackson Tisi. It is part of The Atlantic Selects, an online showcase of short documentaries from independent creators, curated by The Atlantic.
