Tobacco giants would pay out $32.5B to provinces, smokers in “historic” proposed deal

From Global News.

For decades, tobacco marketing failed to mention the highly-addictive nature of their produces — much less the potentially deadly consequences.

Now, following three decades of legal battles, a deal in Canada to compensate current and former smokers suffering from lung cancer and a wide range of other terminal diseases is finally on the horizon.

Under the proposed plan filed Thursday, provinces and territories would receive payments over time, with roughly $6 billion to be payed out when the deal is implemented.

Global’s Katherine Ward reports on what’s in the deal.
