On Saturday, fans of soccer superstar Lionel Messi were furious and demanded refunds after the athlete’s appearance in Kolkata, India didn’t meet expectations. Fans booed and threw items onto the pitch, then stormed the field and vandalized equipment.
"We couldn’t even see him, we couldn’t even get a glimpse of him, so was this scripted? I don’t know," said Ratul, a disappointed Messi fan, "Why weren’t the police taking action? I don’t know anything. Everyone was furious, everyone was very furious."
The Director General of Police in West Bengal, Rajeev Kumar, assured the public that they would get to the bottom of what he said was mismanagement by the event organizer. "We have already detained the main organizer. We are taking action so that this mismanagement does not go unpunished and we will see that the fans, that’s our expectation, that the fans should be adequately compensated," he said.
Lionel Messi’s appearance kicks off a three-day tour across India, where he’s scheduled to attend concerts, youth football clinics, paddle tournaments and launch charitable initiatives.
