US air travel rapidly deteriorates as shutdown continues

From Global News.

Tuesday saw the fifth day in a row where over 1,000 flights had been cancelled due to the ongoing U.S. government shutdown. The department of transportation ordered a 6 per cent decrease in flight capacity at 40 of America’s largest airports, which will increase to 10 per cent by Friday.
“I have worked hard not to play politics, to play this very straight and not having an opinion on the government opening up, but navigating safety and making the right decisions is critical,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
Duffy added that until staffing and safety data improve, airspace reductions will continue in the foreseeable future. However, some are optimistic after 8 democrats joined republicans in the senate to advance a reopening bill.
The U.S. House of Representatives vote on Wednesday will determine whether the government reopens. If the U.S. does reopen, it is not expected for air traffic to return to normal for several at least several days. Reggie Cecchini reports.
