WestJet strike: What passengers need to know as airline faces “damage control”

From Global News.

More than 100,000 travellers have seen their flight plans thrown into disarray as WestJet works to restore service from the long weekend strike, but the airline is warning that disruptions could stretch on for days.

The Calgary-based air carrier confirmed in a release Tuesday that a total of 1,137 flights have so far been cancelled before, during or after the long weekend strike that saw WestJet maintenance engineers take to the picket line. In a statement on Monday, WestJet warned that it will take time to get back up to full operations.

"Instead of WestJet having an adequate strike notice to draw down their schedule in an orderly way, it happened in the most chaotic of circumstances," explained former Air Canada executive Duncan Dee, who added that normally airlines have time to wind down operations before a strike happens.

Global’s Katherine Dornian reports on the after-effects of the strike, and why it caused so much chaos.
