Melinda Howard says she was breaking down cardboard boxes for recycling at her new house in Mississippi when she nicked her hand. The 63-year-old ultra marathoner wrapped her hand with a bandage. A week later, her hand started hurting, and she went to urgent care. What made Howard’s infection so severe is the fact that for years, she had been taking the steroid prednisone, which is commonly prescribed to reduce inflammation, but one side effect is that it thins the skin.
