Could Trump “rip up” safe third country agreement? Here’s what 1 Canadian expert says

From Global News.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly has said Canada will stand firm on its immigration plan, despite concerns president-elect Donald Trump would spur an influx of migrants from the U.S. when he takes office for a second time.

But one expert suggests the Canada-United States Safe Third Country Agreement could be at risk, suggesting that Trump could decide to “rip it up.”

“And then what to we do when people show up at the border? The Canadian government says its planning for this but, look, we’ve got the longest undefended border in the world,” says University of Toronto political science professor Nelson Wiseman.

Wiseman says while the Canada-U.S. border is one area where this country could see a major impact, our culture is another area that is likely to be transformed by a second Trump presidency.
