Like many others operating a street stall, Papy Kalume’s livelihood is precarious. Despite the challenges, he finds that running his own business is still more profitable than working in a hair salon in the DR Congo’s capital city Kinshasa. Kalume is one of thousands trying to make ends meet with an off-the-books job in a country which, according to official figures, has nearly 50 percent unemployment.
