Concerns mount over major retailers switching to digital price tags

Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, is switching to electronic shelf labels (ESL) at all its U.S. stores later this year. Changing prices store-wide used to take days; with ESLs it can take minutes, resulting in savings on labour costs, reduced pricing mistakes and opportunities to create more deals.

Multiple Canadian grocery retailers have already implemented digital labels, with Sobey’s on track to switch to ESLs this year.

As Anne Gaviola reports, consumer groups worry about the potential for algorithmic and targeted pricing made possible by digital price tags and artificial intelligence.
