Liberal MP Michael Ma is facing backlash for comments that appeared to cast doubt on human rights abuses and allegations of forced labour in China.
The remarks were made during a parliamentary committee hearing on Thursday.
Ma, who defected from the Conservatives in December and recently visited Beijing with Prime Minister Mark Carney, has since apologized.
