It’s a huge step for Canada, hitting the defence spending mark required by NATO — two per cent of GDP (Gross Domestic Product).

It’s something the head of NATO, Mark Rutte, has credited in part to pressure by U.S. President Donald Trump.

But at the same time, the American president is rattling allies in a way that’s disrupting U.S.-NATO relations, possibly for years to come.

Kerry Buck, Canada’s former ambassador to NATO, has been advocating for Canada to increase its NATO spending for years and joins The West Block’s Ben Mulroney to discuss the development.
