In this exclusive 2016 interview from the Global News archives, former ‘The West Block’ host Tom Clark speaks with the late and beloved former Ontario NDP leader Stephen Lewis and his son, Avi Lewis.

The two speak about the future of progressive politics in Alberta and Canada, as well as the NDP’s historic Leap Manifesto, which was co-authored by Avi, who makes note of a “thrilling” speech from his father, which he said encapsulated the spirit of the document.

Carrying the torch of his father, Avi was named the new leader of the federal NDP last week – just days before Stephen’s death – after a six-month leadership campaign.

Stephen died at the age of 88 on March 31, 20266, eight years after he was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

From championing human rights to advocating for the plight of African families decimated by HIV-AIDS, Stephen spent a lifetime fighting for causes close to his heart — and his weapons of choice were words.
