From The Enemies Project.
Have you ever lived a double life?
Imtiaz grew up Muslim. He celebrated Muslim holidays and he ate the foods his family loved. Islam wasn’t just a belief system, it was his entire world.
But privately, he was filled with doubt. He struggled with this silent doubt for years. Until he couldn’t hold it in anymore.
Maysa, a conservative Muslim, wondered why he couldn’t just keep these beliefs to himself. Why speak publicly if it would cause so much pain?
Imtiaz lost his family and community.
Maysa feels that people like Imtiaz put her community at risk and make her feel alone in defending it.
Both know the feeling of being cut off.
Both know what it means to carry their pain without being understood.
This conversation isn’t about winning.
It’s about what isolation does to us — and what becomes possible when someone finally listens without trying to erase you.
