Health impacts for the human body in deep space

From Global News.

Managing health in space is a critical part of any mission, from radiation exposure to the absence of normal gravity. Health reporter Katherine Ward digs into unique challenges astronauts face and how crews prepare for emergencies as the Artemis II crew proceeds with their mission around the moon.

Microgravity is a special concern as vertebrae decompress in space and the human spine elongates. “We have an S-shaped curve in our back. That straightens out if you don’t have gravity,” Canadian astronaut Dave Williams says. “The problem is if you come back to earth, they compress down to where they were before. We’ve actually had astronauts have challenges with that after landing.”

The Artemis II mission is set to return to Earth on Friday.
