Iran announced alternative routes for ships travelling through the Strait of Hormuz, citing the risk of sea mines in the main zone of the vital waterway. Iran used this strategy on a large scale during its war with Iraq in the 1980s. Tehran may have 5,000 to 6,000 naval mines in stock.
