Melania Trump delivered a statement at the White House Thursday, claiming that she “never had a relationship” with Jeffrey Epstein – the late, convicted sex offender financier – or his associate and former partner, Ghislaine Maxwell – with whom Trump claimed she had only a polite and “casual correspondence” via email.

Regarding their connection, the First Lady said she and her husband Donald, the current U.S. president, were simply “invited to the same parties as Epstein from time to time,” noting it was common for social circles to overlap in New York City and Palm Beach.

Though it is unclear what prompted the First Lady’s statement Thursday, images and statements that connect her to Epstein – which she dubbed as “completely false” – have circulated for several years.

“Be cautious about what you believe,” Trump said, adding, “The lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today. The individuals lying about me are devoid of ethical standards, humility and respect. I do not object to their ignorance, but rather I reject their mean-spirited attempts to defame my reputation.”

Furthermore, Trump called on Congress to allow Epstein’s victims to testify on Capitol Hill.
