Pope Leo “stands against likes of Trump”: Pontiff speaks to thousands in Cameroon

From Global News.

Thousands gathered outside Japoma Stadium in Douala, Cameroon’s largest city and economic hub, on Friday to attend a Mass led by Pope Leo, the biggest event of his four‑nation Africa tour.

The Vatican, citing local authorities, said around 120,000 people headed to the stadium to take part in the celebration and hear the pope’s address.

Speaking after arriving in Douala by plane from Yaounde, Pope Leo said many Cameroonians face both “material and spiritual poverty,” but urged believers to reject violence as a way of overcoming hardship.

“I was very moved by the Pope’s message. When, I mean, he stands against positions like those of Donald Trump, for example. He is against violence. I think that is normal for a man of God, since the Church promotes peace. And whoever promotes peace cannot encourage violence. Logically, a shepherd of Christ can only denounce acts of violence,” a faithful said.

The pontiff, who has spoken out on war and inequality, called on the faithful to pursue unity and peace, a message that resonated strongly with those in the crowd. Pope Leo concludes his visit to Cameroon on Saturday before continuing his Africa tour to Angola.
