From DW News.
Violent storms and rising seas are putting Mediterranean coastal towns at growing risk. In January 2026, Cyclone Harry struck southern Italy, sending waves up to 10 meters high onto the coast of Sicily. Areas around Nizza di Sicilia and Taormina suffered severe damage, with residents narrowly escaping danger. Decades of construction close to the shoreline have increased vulnerability. Experts warn that a warming Mediterranean is fueling extreme weather, while insufficient coastal protection and rebuilding without long-term planning leave communities exposed to future storms.
