Japan’s north coast has been struck by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake, prompting aftershock and tsunami alerts across the region.

The tremor occurred Monday afternoon off the coast of Sanriku, roughly 10 kilometres below sea surface, the Japan Meteorological Agency revealed.

And after an 80-centimetre tsunami was detected at Kuji Port, the agency warns waves of up to three metres could hit coastal regions.

“Please evacuate to safe, elevated areas — and do not leave your safe location until the tsunami warning is lifted,” Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said at a Tokyo press conference.
