Keir Starmer defended himself before the U.K. House of Commons Monday, amid pressure from opposition parties for him to resign as British prime minister. These calls come after Downing Street suggested Starmer inadvertently misled Parliament over Peter Mandelson’s vetting for his job as U.S. ambassador.

Mandelson, 72, was fired in September following revelations about the depth of his ties to the late, convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Though Starmer admitted his judgement “was wrong” in appointing Mandelson, he was firm in his claims that he was unaware of a prior recommendation from the United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV) office that Mandelson should have been denied vetting clearance.

“I accept that the sensitive personal information provided by an individual being vetted must be protected from disclosure,” Starmer said. “What I do not accept is that the appointing minister cannot be told of the recommendation by UKSV,” he added.

Furthermore, Starmer said he has updated the terms of reference for an ongoing review to ensure it covers how all national security vetting decisions are made.
