Florida launches criminal probe into OpenAI, ChatGPT after mass shooting at university

From Global News.

Florida is launching a criminal probe into OpenAI and its popular artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT in relation to a mass shooting that left two dead and six others wounded at Florida State University in Tallahassee.

"The chatbot advised the shooter on what type of gun to use, on which ammo went with which gun, on whether or not a gun would be useful at short range," Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said on Tuesday. "If it was a person on the other end of that screen, we would be charging them with murder,” he added.

Uthmeier’s office said the investigation will determine whether "OpenAI bears criminal responsibility for ChatGPT’s actions in the shooting.

This comes two months after OpenAI was summoned to Ottawa to talk about its decision not to notify Canadian authorities about the online activities of the shooter responsible — Jesse Van Rootselaar — for the deaths of eight people in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., on Feb. 10.
