The propaganda war surrounding the conflict in Iran has taken an unusual turn. The White House and the Iranian regime appear to be trolling one another online, using memes, deepfakes and AI-generated videos.

Henry Giroux from McMaster University describes the glorification of lethality as “obscene” and says, “this focus on a gaming culture where victims vanish from moral consideration is utterly immoral.”

As Jeff Semple reports, this parallel information war is blurring the lines between what’s real and what’s fake.
