Avi Lewis gives first news conference as NDP leader | FULL

From Global News.

Newly elected NDP leader Avi Lewis spoke in Winnipeg Monday as part of his first press conference on the job. He doesn’t have a seat in Parliament and is signalling he isn’t rushing to secure one.

"The caucus made it clear that they will continue to hold the Liberal government accountable in Parliament," he said, and added: "The caucus was unanimous that they don’t see a need for me to be in Parliament immediately and that’s something that I had already determined."

He also addressed provincial backlash, saying that Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre "don’t get along at all" and "I don’t know that they ever talk, but they battle in the media and the conservative party staggers on day after day, week after week." Lewis acknowledged, "There are differences in our NDP family," and said, "My door is open. I’m ready to talk at any time."

Lewis won the party’s leadership on the first ballot, getting 56 per cent of the vote. He’s now tasked with rebuilding the NDP, which has just six seats in Parliament.
