The much-anticipated Artemis II launch is expected to go ahead on Wednesday after a series of delays and cancellations, marking the first crewed mission to the moon since the Apollo missions more than 50 years ago.
Lifting off from the Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, Fla., the crew will embark on an approximately four-day outbound trip, reaching the far side of the moon. The trajectory of the Orion spacecraft will then harness the Earth-moon gravity field, swinging back toward Earth after flying around 4,600 miles beyond the moon, creating a trail that resembles a figure eight.
The 10-day mission will set the stage for long-term space exploration and science on the lunar surface. Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch and Canadian mission specialist Jeremy Hansen will test the flight capabilities of the Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft during the flight around the moon.
The crew is expected to land in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego, Calif., where recovery teams from both NASA and the Department of Defence will bring them back to shore.
