Iranian forces are responsible for shooting down the American F-15E fighter jet that was downed over Iran today, a U.S. official with knowledge of the matter confirmed to MS NOW.

The fighter jet did not crash due to mechanical failure as some initially suspected, the official who requested anonymity to speak about the ongoing rescue operation said.

One crew member of the jet was rescued by U.S. forces, while the second crew member of the two-seat F-15E aircraft remains missing and has been declared “DUSTWUN,” or “Duty Status, Whereabouts Unknown.” This is a developing story.
