Champagne talks “integrity” of Canada’s supply chain, forced labour concerns ahead of China visit

From Global News.

Ahead of his visit to China on Tuesday, Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne shared his thoughts on concerns of forced labour in China.

Asked what the federal government is doing to ensure electric vehicles (EVs) and EV parts exported from China are not products of forced labour, Champagne told reporters in Montreal on Monday that he would raise the concern during his visit to the country.

“The integrity of [Canada’s] supply chain is always something we bring up in our discussions,” Champagne said.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that “there are parts of China that are higher risk and therefore need to be diligent.”

Earlier this year, United Nations experts said that “there is a persistent pattern of alleged State-imposed forced labour involving ethnic minorities across multiple provinces in China.”
