Explosives found in Serbia near gas pipeline supplying Hungary, days before Hungarian election

From Global News.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Monday suggested Ukraine had an interest and the capability to sabotage Hungary’s gas supply, after two backpacks containing explosives and ignition devices were found near a pipeline in Serbia that supplies 60 per cent of Hungary’s natural gas imported from Russia.

Orban didn’t directly blame Ukraine of planting the explosives but said the incident "fits into a series of events," referring to explosions on the Nord Stream pipeline in 2022, which German authorities accused two Ukrainian men of plotting. Ukraine has denied involvement in the Nord Stream explosions.

The incident comes days before a national election in Hungary, with Orban’s party trailing in opinion polls. According to Reuters, a former Hungarian intelligence official said there had been recent discussions in Hungarian security circles regarding a precise plan for a "false-flag" operation impacting the pipeline in Serbia as part of an effort to influence the Hungarian election.

Peter Magyar, leader of the opposition Tisza party also raised doubts about the incident, saying it appeared aimed at boosting Orban’s electoral prospects.
