Human eyes have never seen the Sun’s south pole—until now

From Science Magazine.

Despite decades of solar astronomy, neither robotic nor human eyes had ever seen the Sun’s polar regions. That is, until March 2025, when the Solar Orbiter took the first clear pictures of the Sun’s south pole from an angle of 15° below the solar equator.

From that angle, the orbiter’s three instruments were able to image never-before-seen parts of the Sun’s surface. (The ultraviolet light observed by its Extreme Ultraviolet Imager is seen in the video.)

The images and videos, released by the European Space Agency, usher in a new era of solar science, experts say.
