Israeli police prevented a senior Catholic cleric from entering Christianity’s most sacred site in Jerusalem to celebrate Palm Sunday mass, sparking protest in several European countries.

Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, an archbishop with Catholic jurisdiction across Israel and the Palestinian Territories, was stopped from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the decision was taken due to security concerns over Iranian strikes, but has since said that the cardinal will get “full and immediate access” to the church.
