Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday he has spoken to Marilyn Gladu about her controversial stance on some social issues after announcing Wednesday she had crossed the floor from the Conservatives —and said she would vote with government.

Gladu, MP for Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong, voted against the 2022 ban on conversion therapy and has said she would allow MPs to advance legislation to restrict abortion access.

“We have those core values. Those values don’t change,” Carney said.

“Others come to support the mission of the party and the government at this crucial time — and we are fortunate that they take those decisions because they bring expertise, they bring perspectives, they bring energy and they help us work together.”

Carney added that the Liberal Party welcomes diverse perspectives and expertise.
