From Global News.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte was given the opportunity to clarify remarks he made last summer during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, where he suggested Trump was “daddy.”
Speaking Thursday in Washington, Rutte explained that it was a linguistics issue, and that the Dutch word for “father” simply translates to “daddy” in English.
“I was not calling him my daddy,” Rutte said. “But, of course, ‘daddy’ has also a special connotation, and now I have to live with this for the rest of my life,” he added with a hearty laugh.
On whether he thinks Trump will remain in NATO – amid recent threats the U.S. may leave the alliance – Rutte said their Wednesday conversation was “really open and really between friends,” adding that there was clear “disappointment” from the Republican leader.
Rutte’s “long-planned visit” to Washington came after Trump condemned European allies – many part of NATO – over differences on the war in Iran and their refusal to send ships to help unblock the Strait of Hormuz.
