Donald Trump’s threat that "a whole civilization will die tonight" is language that experts warn may meet the threshold for incitement to genocide. Historian Timothy Snyder warns against treating Trump’s words as mere bluff. Normalizing the language of annihilation, he argues, carries consequences of its own, and in Trump’s case, is not effective. “We managed to commit ourselves to the possibility of committing genocide– and then get completely crushed in the negotiations that followed.”
