U.S. President Donald Trump, in an address to the nation on Wednesday night, claimed that the United States was "winning and now winning bigger than ever before," in the war with Iran. 

He said the U.S. was "totally independent" of the Middle East but was there to "help," even though "we don’t have to be here." 

"Our objectives are very simple and clear. We are systematically dismantling the regime’s ability to threaten America or project power outside of their borders," he said. "And tonight I’m pleased to say that these core strategic objectives are nearing completion."
