U.S. President Donald Trump described in detail a U.S. operation to recover a downed American pilot who hid in mountainous Iranian terrain and eluded capture by Iranian forces.

Trump said the pilot, identified only by "Dude 44 Bravo," kept climbing higher to improve the chances for recovery, adding the Air Force personnel was seen moving via an unidentified U.S. camera link.

Hundreds of American forces were involved in the search and recovery mission over the weekend to prevent the Iranians from finding him first, Trump said.

"It’s something that’s usually not attempted as much as you want to attempt. And bad things [can] happen,” Trump said. “It might not have been attempted before, but we did. And we had great talent. We got a little luck, too, I would say,"  he added.
