From Global News.
One day after leaving the NDP and crossing the floor, Nunavut MP Lori Idlout joined her first Liberal Caucus meeting Wednesday and was met with cheers and chants from her new colleagues as she entered the quarters with Prime Minister Mark Carney.
“At this important moment in our history, Canadians are coming together to build a strong future. Lori’s voice and leadership will make an invaluable contribution to this work as part of Canada’s new government,” Carney wrote in a social media post.
Justice Minister Sean Fraser described Idlout as a “friend,” while Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said he is “not surprised” members have been crossing the floor to be at the “decision table” with Carney’s government.
Interim party leader for the NDP Don Davies criticized floor-crossers for breaking the “sacred trust” of voters who elected her. He also condemned Carney, alleging he was making “back-room deals” with MPs to “stitch together” a majority Liberal government.
The Liberals now have 170 seats in the House of Commons while 172 is required for a majority. The Liberals are expected to reach that majority by winning two safe Toronto seats in next month’s by-elections — something many Liberals MPs seem positive about.
